Vegan Chocolate Orange Baked Oatmeal
Good morning everyone! As you can tell by the title of this blog post, I am sharing another baked oatmeal recipe today. I am especially excited about this particular recipe, because it combines two of my favorite flavors – chocolate and orange.
This chocolate orange baked oatmeal sneaks in protein, it’s gluten free friendly, and it tastes delicious! You can eat it for breakfast, a quick snack, or even a dessert at the end of the night. The citrus from the mandarin orange is bursting with flavor and natural sweetness. It gets even sweeter and juicier as it bakes, and the flavor combination is incredible.
I thought that now would be the absolute perfect time to bring this recipe to the blog because it is packed with hydrating citrus fruit. It is such an easy sweet breakfast, snack, or dessert. I’ve been loving it so much lately and I know you guys will too! Now, let’s go over some quick things to note for this recipe. Then, we will take a look at all the ingredients you will need to make this tasty, decadent, chocolate orange baked oatmeal recipe.
Why Are My Baked Oats Soggy?
If you remove your baked oats from the oven too soon, they will turn out liquidy/soggy in the middle, which you definitely want to avoid. In order to achieve a soft, cake-like texture, you’ll want to make sure to bake your oats until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. However, if you prefer your baked oats a bit gooey in the middle, then you can shorten the bake time slightly. I personally enjoy a cake-like baked oatmeal texture, so I cook my oats a bit longer.
Chocolate Orange Baked Oatmeal – Ingredients
- Rolled Oats – The first ingredient you will need for this recipe is, of course, the rolled oats. You can’t make a baked oatmeal recipe without the key base ingredient. If you want this recipe to be gluten free, just make sure to use gluten free rolled oats. I personally am not gluten free, but I know some people are due to allergies, so I try to include a number of recipes on my blog that even those who can’t eat gluten are able to enjoy.
- Vegan Chocolate Protein Powder – The second ingredient you will need for this recipe is the chocolate protein powder. This ingredient adds sweetness, chocolate flavor, and extra protein to the baked oatmeal. It also helps the oatmeal achieve that fluffy, delicious, cake-like texture. I used the Orgain vegan protein powder in the creamy chocolate fudge flavor. I love the flavor and texture it achieves when baked, so I highly recommend it if you are in the market for a good vegan protein powder.
- Baking Powder – The third ingredient you will need for this recipe is the baking powder. The baking powder acts as the key leavening agent used in this recipe to help the oatmeal rise.
- Fresh Mandarin Orange Slices – You will also need some mandarin orange wedges for this baked chocolate orange oatmeal. This ingredient is used to achieve that perfect chocolate orange flavor combination. It also adds moisture to the oatmeal batter. We will be adding some mandarin oranges to the oatmeal batter itself, as well as a few more on top of the oatmeal before popping it in the oven to bake.
- Chocolate Chips – Another ingredient you will need for this recipe are the chocolate chips. This ingredient will be mixed into your oatmeal batter before you pour the batter into a ramekin to bake in the oven. You can also add a few more chocolate chips on top for additional sweetness and flavor. You can use vegan dark chocolate chips or semi-sweet chocolate chips depending on your personal preference.
- Nut Milk – The final ingredient you will need for this recipe is the nut milk. I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but you can use whichever kind you prefer or have on hand. It adds creaminess and flavor to the oatmeal batter.
