Vegan Thumbprint Cookies

Good morning friends! As I am writing this blog post, Christmas is just a few days away. However, just because the holiday season is coming to a close, that doesn’t mean the fun, tasty, holiday themed recipes have to stop. This week, I tried my hand at making some healthy, vegan, blackberry jam filled thumbprint cookies.

This recipe is a holiday classic that traditionally has a buttery cookie base with a jam filled center. While most thumbprint cookie recipes are not vegan and dairy free, my version is (of course!).

These blackberry jam filled thumbprint cookies turned out super tasty, subtly sweet, and ultra fluffy. My entire family enjoyed them immensely, as did I, so I knew that I had to get this recipe up for you guys. I hope you all enjoy this insanely delicious holiday cookie recipe that truly can be enjoyed all winter (and year) long.

Now, let’s go over some logistics as well as the ingredients you will need to make this recipe a smashing success.

When To Put Jam In The Thumbprint Cookies

One of the most common questions surrounding holiday jam filled thumbprint cookies is when you are actually supposed to put the jam in the thumbprint cookies. This step is crucial to ensure that the cookies turn out aesthetically well.

What I like to do is completely make the cookie base, divide the dough, form each ball of dough into a cookie shape, and then make the indents for the jam with the back of a spoon. After all of these steps are complete, you can fill each indent with your jam of choice, and then pop the cookies in the oven to bake. It is as simple as that!

Can You Freeze Jam Filled Thumbprint Cookies?

The other really common question asked about these vegan thumbprint cookies is whether or not you can freeze them. You definitely can, but you will want to make sure they are securely sealed. They will stay fresh for a few days in the freezer. Then, you can thaw and warm the cookies before eating them. However, I personally think they taste much better fresh from the oven as opposed to thawed from the freezer, so keep that in mind!

What Is The Best Filling For Thumbprint Cookies?

Since the jam is the star of the show for these thumbprint cookies, it is also important to discuss the best filling option for them. I personally used homemade blackberry jam for this batch, but you can use whichever jam you enjoy most. Any fruit flavor will work well, so pick the one you like best! Now, let’s take a look at the list of ingredients you will need for this cookie recipe.

Thumbprint Cookies With Jam Filling – Ingredients

  • Old Fashioned Rolled Oats – The old fashioned rolled oats are the first ingredient you will need for this holiday cookie recipe. We will be blending them into an oat flour to use for this recipe.
  • Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – The whole wheat pastry flour combines perfectly with the oat flour to form a delicious cookie base.
  • Baking Soda – The baking soda ensures that these cookies rise as they bake. It is the key leavening agent for this recipe that you do not want to forget.
  • Almond Butter – The creamy almond butter adds richness, moisture, and a source of healthy fat to this recipe.
  • Coconut Oil – The coconut oil adds additional moisture to this vegan thumbprint cookie recipe.
  • Jam Of Choice – The jam of choice is the star of the show for this recipe. I used homemade blackberry jam, but you can use whichever kind is your favorite.
  • Pure Maple Syrup – The pure maple syrup serves as the main source of sweetness for this cookie recipe.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – The unsweetened applesauce adds additional sweetness and moisture to this holiday cookie recipe.
