Healthy Chocolate Microwave Oatmeal
Good morning everyone! As you guys already know, I am a huge oatmeal person. I especially love eating it for breakfast during busy work weeks. It is so quick, easy, and simple to make. Oatmeal truly is the perfect meal for those mornings when you just want to get a little bit of food into your system and then get right to work.
I am also not someone who enjoys large breakfasts. I usually like to drink a cup of coffee right after I wake up, then eat breakfast about an hour later. I also get up around 5 AM most days, so maybe that’s why I don’t have a huge appetite first thing in the morning. Regardless, oatmeal is one of my work day go to breakfasts, which is why I have so many oatmeal recipes on the blog.
And you would think that I must get tired of oatmeal since I eat it so often, but that actually isn’t the case. I constantly switch up my flavors and add-ins, which keeps it a lot more exciting.
However, I also enjoy having oatmeal for dessert on occasion. The recipe that I am about to share is perfect for those nights when I want a chocolatey treat.
This healthy chocolate brownie batter oatmeal cooks in the microwave in just 90 seconds. Plus, it requires only a few simple ingredients. So, let’s dive into some quick things to note for this recipe. Then, we will take a look at the list of ingredients you will need to make this chocolate microwave oatmeal recipe.
Can You Cook Oats In A Microwave?
The answer to this question may seem obvious to many of you. However, if you are new to trying oatmeal, you might think that the only way to cook creamy oatmeal is by using the stovetop method. Fortunately, you can easily make creamy oatmeal in the microwave in a matter of minutes.
I personally love making oatmeal in the microwave. There are a few key methods that I use to make sure it turns out thick and creamy. First off, I use a good amount of liquid. If your oatmeal turns out extremely thick, you probably didn’t use the right ratio of oats to liquid. You’ll want to add a bit more to thin it down and make it creamier. Second, I like to use quick oats over rolled oats to achieve a smoother, creamier texture. Finally, I make sure that I don’t overcook the oatmeal. If you cook it for way too long, it won’t turn out quite as creamy.
Now that we have covered some quick things to note for this recipe, let’s take a look at the ingredients you will need to make this healthy chocolate microwave oatmeal.
Healthy Chocolate Microwave Oatmeal – Ingredients
- Quick Oats – Quick oats are the main ingredient you will need for this recipe. I prefer quick oats over rolled oats because they achieve a super creamy texture. To make this recipe gluten free, use your favorite gluten free oats.
- Mini Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips – The chocolate chips add rich chocolate flavor, as well as some sweetness to this recipe. Any semi-sweet chocolate chips will work. I used miniature semi-sweet chocolate chips. They melt right into the oatmeal and taste absolutely delicious.
- Cocoa Powder – The cocoa powder adds color and rich chocolatey goodness to this recipe. I used Hershey’s special dark cocoa powder.
- Nut Milk – Nut milk is the essential liquid used in this recipe for creaminess. I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but you can use whichever nut milk you prefer or have on hand.
- Unsweetened Applesauce – The applesauce adds moisture and natural sweetness to this recipe. It is the perfect addition to this oatmeal.
- Pure Maple Syrup – This ingredient adds the perfect amount of extra sweetness. It combines well with all the other flavors present in this recipe. You can also add an extra drizzle on top of your oatmeal for even more sweetness.
- Nut Butter (Optional) – When I make this oatmeal recipe for breakfast rather than dessert, I like to add a big scoop of nut butter on top for extra satiety. My personal favorite to pair with this recipe is chocolate almond butter. However, this is an optional topping that you can easily omit if desired.
