Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie Recipe

Good morning everyone! Today, I wanted to share a simple smoothie recipe with all of you that I have been absolutely loving lately. It combines two of my favorite flavors, cherry and chocolate, into a tasty and refreshing smoothie. I call it a “black forest” smoothie because it combines chocolate and cherry flavors, which are commonly found in black forest cake.

This smoothie recipe is ultra rich and creamy thanks to the frozen fruit, chocolate protein powder, and non-dairy milk. You will definitely want to use a high powered blender to blend the frozen fruit into a nice and creamy smoothie with ease.

Not only is this chocolate cherry smoothie super refreshing, but it’s also very easy to make. It requires just a few ingredients, so it is the perfect quick snack to refuel with directly after a workout. It’s one of my new go-to snacks to whip up after a run.

Now, let’s take a look at some quick things to note for this recipe. Then, we will go over the list of ingredients you will need to make this chocolate cherry smoothie recipe a smashing success.

What Fruits Can I Add To A Chocolate Protein Shake?

There are many different fruits you can add to a chocolate protein smoothie/shake in order to add flavor and micronutrients. There are a few combinations I especially enjoy. First off, I love throwing frozen banana and creamy peanut butter into a chocolate smoothie/shake to make a chocolate peanut butter banana flavor. This option turns out ultra rich and creamy, plus it packs in some extra protein and fat.

Another great option is to throw in some frozen strawberries for a chocolate covered strawberry protein shake. Finally, you can make a chocolate cherry protein smoothie, just like we are going to do today. The flavor possibilities truly are endless. A good rule of thumb is to pick the frozen fruit you enjoy most, add it to your blender with some chocolate protein powder and nut milk, and blend until you get a creamy, cold, and refreshing treat!

Now that we have covered some important things to note, let’s take a look at the ingredients you will need to make this chocolate cherry protein smoothie.

Chocolate Cherry Protein Smoothie – Ingredients

  • Frozen Banana – The ripe frozen banana adds sweetness, creaminess, and thickness to this smoothie recipe without overpowering the chocolate and cherry flavors. I love using frozen banana in my smoothie recipes, and this chocolate cherry one is no exception. I always recommend freezing your banana in chunks so that it’s a bit easier to blend.
  • Frozen Cherries – Ok, this ingredient is kind of a given. You can’t have a cherry chocolate smoothie without the cherries. Frozen cherries are super sweet and tasty, which makes them the perfect fruit to add to this recipe. I used dark sweet cherries from Trader Joe’s. One important thing to note – make sure your cherries are pitted before you add them to the blender!
  • Vegan Chocolate Protein Powder – The chocolate protein powder is a necessary ingredient for this recipe. It provides additional sweetness and rich chocolate flavor. I used the Orgain Simple protein powder in the chocolate peanut butter cup flavor, but you can use whichever brand you prefer or have on hand. A little bit goes a long way here.
  • Cocoa Powder – This ingredient amplifies the chocolate flavor in the recipe even more. A little bit of cocoa powder goes a long way. I used the Hershey’s special dark cocoa powder.
  • Nut Milk – The nut milk adds a ton of creaminess to this protein smoothie. I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but you can use whichever kind you prefer or have on hand.
  • Miniature Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips – This ingredient serves as the perfect topping for this chocolate cherry smoothie recipe. The chocolate chips give the smoothie even more sweetness.

As you can tell, this recipe is super easy to make. Smoothies in general are one of the best options for when you are crunched for time. One other thing I love about smoothies is how customizable they are. You can add ingredients such as spinach, chia seeds, and ground flaxseed for extra nutrients and satiety. Or, you could add my personal favorite smoothie topping – creamy peanut butter.

Anyway, that’s it for this recipe. As per usual, I will be back with another blog post very soon.
