Best Easy Soft Baked Pretzels Recipe

Good morning everyone! Today I am going to be sharing with you all another super tasty snack. This one is also super fun to make, so grab your friends, family, or even your kids, and you will have an activity to do together.

The recipe I’m sharing is for soft baked pretzels, but these aren’t just any soft baked pretzels. They’re healthier than traditional pretzels because they are baked in the oven and made using whole wheat and oat flour for optimal nutrient benefits.

Plus, rather than using traditional salt, we are going to be using everything but the bagel seasoning for a super unique taste. Of course, if you don’t have this specific seasoning, you can go with the traditional salt.

This recipe is actually based off my air fryer lemon donuts (coming to the blog soon!). I simply made a few key tweaks to achieve the perfect soft baked pretzels. I’m super happy with how they turned out. So, let’s go ahead and take a look at all the ingredients you will need to make this recipe.

Best Easy Soft Baked Pretzels Recipe – Ingredients

  • Oat Flour – The oat flour used in this recipe combines perfectly with the whole wheat pastry flour to create our soft baked pretzels.

If you don’t have oat flour, you can easily make some yourself by using a high speed blender. I almost always make my own. I just blend up rolled oats in my NutriBullet for about 10 seconds and the oats turn into a nice fine powder.
  • Whole Wheat Flour – For this recipe, I used Bob’s Red Mill whole wheat pastry flour. I prefer to use pastry flour in recipes like this because it’s a bit less dense than the regular whole wheat flour. When combined with the oat flour, you end up with the perfect flour mixture for your pretzels.
  • Active Dry Yeast – The yeast will help the dough rise in this recipe. You can easily double the recipe and use the whole packet of yeast if you’d like, or you can use the other half for my air fryer lemon donut recipe (will link here when it’s out) 🙂 Either way, this ingredient is a definite necessity to make these baked pretzels.
  • Truvia Cane Sugar Blend – While I haven’t tried it out, you could probably substitute 1/2 tsp of regular sugar for this ingredient. This ingredient will be combined with our nut milk to activate the yeast, so make sure you don’t forget it.
  • Olive Oil – The olive oil in this recipe adds richness and moisture to the dough, along with a healthy source of fat. It also adds some flavor to the pretzels.
  • Everything But The Bagel Seasoning – Now, if you don’t have this seasoning, you can substitute regular salt. However, I think this seasoning is super tasty, and it gives the pretzels a lot of flavor.

I purchased mine at Trader Joe’s, but I think you can find it at many grocery stores nowadays. It serves as the perfect topping for our pretzels.
  • Nut Milk – The nut milk will be heated and combined with the Truvia blend and yeast to activate it. It also serves as the liquid to turn our flour mixture into dough, so it’s a crucial ingredient. I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk for this recipe, but you can use whatever nut milk you have on hand and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup oat flour
  • 1/2 cup + 3 tbsp whole wheat pastry flour (I used Bob's Red Mill)
  • 1 tsp Truvia Cane Sugar Blend
  • 1/2 packet active dry yeast
  • everything but the bagel seasoning (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup almond milk (I used unsweetened vanilla)
  • 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil

Instructions

  • Heat your nut milk to about 100° F so the yeast can be activated (don't warm it too much or you'll kill the yeast).
  • Combine the Truvia blend, nut milk, and yeast in a mixing bowl until mostly dissolved, then set aside for a few minutes so the yeast can activate.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine your two flours thoroughly.
  • Add in your yeast mixture and stir until a thick dough forms.
  • Pour in 1/2 tbsp of the olive oil and mix again thoroughly.
    Pretzel Dough Ball
  • Cover your dough with a towel and let it sit for 30 minutes to rise.
  • Preheat oven to 350° F.
  • Knead your dough with your hands for a few minutes.
  • Split your dough into four equal sized balls and roll them out into long rope shapes.
  • Form them into pretzels and place them on a lined baking sheet.
    Pre Bake
  • Lightly brush the top of each pretzel with the remaining olive oil.
  • Sprinkle each pretzel generously with everything but the bagel seasoning.
    With Seasonings
  • Bake for about 15 minutes.
  • Enjoy them dipped in mustard or your favorite cheese sauce!

Keyword everything but the bagel, olive oil, pretzels, seasoned, soft baked

Even when I was a little girl, I loved soft pretzels. When my family went to the fair or an amusement park, it was one of my favorite snacks to enjoy.

Because I have been a vegetarian since I was about six years old, there were many fair foods that I never ate. However, the churros, elephant ears, and pretzels were all vegetarian friendly, so they were my go-to choices. Whenever I was in the mood for a savory snack, the soft pretzel was the obvious choice.

These soft baked pretzels brought back some of those fun childhood memories with my family, so I hope they do the same for you. Or, maybe they’ll help you make new memories with the ones you love. After all, they’re super fun to make and twist into pretzel shapes! I can’t wait for you to try them, because I know you’ll love them. Talk soon!

Sending happiness & light your way!
