Birthday Cake Protein Donut Holes

Good morning everyone! The recipe that I’m sharing today is a tasty treat packed with protein. These birthday cake baked protein donut holes make the perfect post workout snack or sweet treat to enjoy with a cold glass of almond milk.

Personally, I have always been a chocolate cake and donut person. When given the choice, I tend to choose chocolate over vanilla. However, I’ve always had a love for birthday cake flavored treats, especially donut holes. So, I thought I’d make my own vegan and protein packed version to enjoy whenever the craving hits.

These vegan donuts are sweet, moist, flavorful, and packed with sprinkles in every bite. They are an easy treat to meal prep and store in the refrigerator to pack up and take with you on the go to the gym or work. Now, let’s take a look at some quick things to note for this recipe. Then, we will dive into the list of ingredients you’ll need to make this birthday cake baked protein donut hole recipe a smashing success!

Can You Bake Donuts Instead Of Deep Frying Them?

As most of you probably know, donuts are typically deep fried rather than baked. However, I have always baked my donuts in the oven. There are a number of reasons I like to bake my donuts rather than fry them, the top one being that I really like the taste of cakey donuts.

It’s actually a lot less difficult to bake your donuts in the oven rather than deep fry them in a pot of oil. All you have to do for this recipe is mix all the ingredients together and roll the donut hole dough into little balls of equal size. Then, you’lll want to place them on a parchment lined baking sheet and pop them in the oven to bake. After about 13 – 15 minutes, you’ll have the perfect little baked birthday cake donut holes. I like to eat these donut holes after they’ve had a chance to chill in the refrigerator for a bit, but you can also enjoy them warm. It really is that easy to make these baked donut holes!

Now that we’ve went over a few things to note for this recipe, let’s take a look at the list of ingredients you’ll need to make these birthday cake donut holes.

Birthday Cake Baked Protein Donut Holes – Ingredients

  • Vanilla Protein Powder – The first ingredient you will need for this recipe is the vanilla protein powder. This ingredient gives the donuts that classic vanilla cake batter flavor. It also adds sweetness to the donut holes. I used the Orgain Simple brand of vegan vanilla protein powder. I highly recommend this one as it has the best flavor and texture I’ve found in a vegan protein powder.
  • Rolled or Quick Cooking Oats – The next ingredient you will want for this recipe is the rolled or quick cooking oats. This ingredient will be blended up to form a fine oat flour.
  • Gluten Free Flour – The gluten free flour combines with the protein powder and oat flour to form the perfect dry base for this recipe. I used the King Arthur one-to-one baking flour, but you can use whichever kind you prefer.
  • Coconut Sugar – This ingredient adds a bit of extra sweetness to the protein donut hole base. A little bit goes a long way.
  • Rainbow Sprinkles – You can’t have birthday cake donut holes without the rainbow sprinkles. This ingredient adds sweetness, color, and flavor to your baked protein donut holes.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce – This ingredient adds a ton of moisture and some natural sweetness to the donut holes to ensure that they don’t turn out too dry or crumbly.
  • Creamy Almond Butter – This ingredient adds, moisture, richness, and flavor to your protein donut holes. I used the Trader Joe’s raw almond butter, but you can use whichever kind you prefer or have on hand.
  • Pure Maple Syrup – The pure maple syrup adds stickiness, moisture, and sweetness to this recipe. It’s one of my favorite liquid sweeteners to use in vegan baked goods, and this recipe is no exception.
