Easy Hummus Recipe Without Tahini
Good morning friends! Today, I am sharing a simple hummus recipe with all of you. It is super quick and easy to make, and it requires only five ingredients (as long as you don’t count the water and salt). This hummus comes out super creamy, but it requires absolutely no tahini. Instead, we will use extra virgin olive oil to achieve a rich flavor and creamy texture.
Hummus is honestly one of my all-time favorite dips. When I was in college, it was one of my go-to snacking staples. I used to pack it up with carrots, pretzels, or pita chips. It was really convenient to eat after my workouts (I was a collegiate runner) or between classes when I didn’t have time to go home and make a snack.
While I do buy hummus at the store fairly often (especially during busy weeks when I want to save time), nothing measures up to the fresh taste of homemade hummus. I really should make it at home more often than I do. It is so easy to meal prep and enjoy throughout the week. Plus, my tahini free hummus recipe doesn’t require any fancy ingredients, which is always a huge plus. It also keeps the cost down.
Now, let’s go over some quick logistics for this recipe. Then, we will dive into the list of ingredients you’ll need to make this tahini free hummus.
Is Hummus Without Tahini Good?
I first want to address a common question regarding tahini free hummus – does it taste good? In my personal opinion, tahini free hummus tastes exceptionally good, but there are a few crucial steps you must follow to ensure that it has ample flavor and a smooth consistency.
Tahini is often used in hummus to achieve a smooth texture and rich flavor. So, in order to make sure that your tahini free hummus turns out equally rich and smooth, you need a solid replacement. For this recipe, I chose extra virgin olive oil. It truly is a crucial ingredient, so it should not be omitted.
Now that we have covered how to make creamy hummus without tahini, let’s take a look at the full list of ingredients you will need for this recipe.
Easy Hummus Recipe Without Tahini – Ingredients
- Garbanzo Beans – Garbanzo beans (also called chickpeas) are the first key ingredient you will need for this hummus recipe. This is unsurprising, as garbanzo beans serve as the base for pretty much any classic hummus recipe. For simplicity sake, I used canned garbanzo beans. Mine did have a bit of salt in them. You will want to drain and rinse them thoroughly before adding them to your blender.
- Cumin – Cumin is a key spice for this recipe. It definitely should not be omitted.
- Garlic Powder – The garlic powder adds even more flavor to this hummus recipe. It is one of my favorite ingredients to add to savory recipes, and it really elevates the flavor of the hummus. You could also use fresh minced garlic to taste that you’ve sauteéd.
- Water – The water is used to aid the blending of the hummus. I personally like my hummus thick and creamy, but you still need some sort of liquid to help the hummus come together.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil – The extra virgin olive oil is the source of fat that provides the hummus with extra richness and flavor. It also ensures the consistency comes out nice and creamy. A little bit goes a long way.
- Lemon Juice – The lemon juice adds additional flavor to this hummus recipe. Make sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice for optimal flavor. The pre-packaged kind doesn’t taste quite as good (in my opinion).
- Salt – The salt adds even more flavor to this simple hummus recipe. You will adjust this ingredient to your own personal taste. I don’t like my food super salty, and my canned garbanzo beans already had a bit of salt in them. So, I added just a little pink himalayan salt to my hummus.
