Easy Vegan Tempeh Strips

Good morning friends! As you may have noticed, I’ve been posting a lot of sweet recipes recently. So, I thought it was time I switched things up and shared a savory recipe. Today, I am sharing my recipe for easy vegan tempeh strips. These tempeh strips are packed with flavor, plant based protein, and they are extremely easy to make. They taste delicious in a wide variety of meals. I like to use them on top of avocado toast, mix them into salads, etc.

Plus, these tempeh strips require just a few simple ingredients, like tempeh, liquid aminos (or soy sauce), and olive oil. They cook in just minutes, and you can make a big batch of them to have on hand for a variety of meals.

Now, let’s quickly go through a few things to note for this recipe. Then, we will dive into the full list of ingredients you will need to make these vegan tempeh strips a smashing success!

How Do You Cook Tempeh?

There are many different ways you can cook tempeh. Two very popular methods include the pan fry method and the baking method. Baked tempeh is absolutely delicious. However, that is not the method I chose to use for this tempeh recipe.

For this recipe, I went with the pan fry method. The main reason I chose to do this was so that I could cook it in the liquid aminos and olive oil for extra flavor. Plus, it gets nice and golden brown when cooked on the stovetop. It achieves a crispier texture (especially if you make your tempeh strips thinner), which pairs really nicely on top of avocado toast. While the baking method is great as well, we will focus on the pan fry method for this vegan tempeh strips recipe.

How Do You Eat Trader Joe’s Tempeh?

The Trader Joe’s brand tempeh is the one that I used for this recipe. Much like any packaged tempeh, you can cook and eat it in a variety of ways. Tempeh itself isn’t super flavorful. However, when you add a seasoning or marinade, you end up with tempeh that is packed with flavor and protein.

For this recipe, I chose to cut the tempeh into thin strips, dip the tempeh strips in liquid aminos, and then pan fry the strips in olive oil. Both the aminos and olive oil add flavor to the tempeh strips. Once the tempeh strips have cooked for a few minutes on each side, you will want to let them cool for a bit. Then, you can serve them up with whatever you’d like. As you can tell from the photos, I decided to use some of my tempeh strips on top of a crumpet with mashed avocado and everything but the bagel seasoning for a tasty snack. Now that we have covered a few quick things to note for this recipe, let’s go through the list of ingredients you will need to make these vegan tempeh strips.

Easy Vegan Tempeh Strips – Ingredients

  • Tempeh – The first ingredient you will need for this recipe is, of course, the tempeh. I got mine at Trader Joe’s, but you can find tempeh at almost any grocery store. You will want to cut your tempeh widthwise into strips that are about 1/4″ thick.
  • Liquid Aminos – The liquid aminos add a ton of flavor to the tempeh strips. You will be dipping each tempeh strip into some liquid aminos before placing the strips in a pan to cook. If you don’t have liquid aminos, you could use soy sauce instead for a similar flavor.
  • Olive Oil – The olive oil is the final ingredient you will need to make these tempeh strips. This will be added to the pan before you place the tempeh strips in the pan to cook. The olive oil will prevent sticking and also provide the tempeh strips with some extra flavor and richness.
