What Kind of Apples are Best for Apple Butter?
There are so many different kinds of apples to choose from, so I understand why this is such a common question in regards to apple butter. Personally, I like to go with granny smith apples. I love the tartness that they provide, and I think the flavor profile pairs really well with the sweetness of the coconut sugar in this recipe.
Honestly, most kinds of apples will work just fine for this recipe. I will say that soft apple varieties tend to work extremely well, as they cook down quite nicely into a soft and blendable mixture, which is exactly what you want for this homemade apple butter recipe. If you want to replicate this recipe exactly, go with granny smith apples, as that is the variety I used to make my apple butter.
How Do You Know When Apple Butter is Done?
There are a number of factors that will impact how long your apple butter takes to cook. In the end, it comes down to your personal preference in regards to the consistency you’d like your apple butter to have. I like my apple butter to be on the thicker side, so I cook mine for a bit longer.
By following the steps in this recipe, you should have no problem creating a thick, delicious, and sweet apple butter spread. However, make sure to watch your apple mixture closely while it simmers. You don’t want to leave it unattended for too long, or you could easily burn your apple butter mixture.

You could also use another apple variety if you prefer. However, I will say that I really enjoy the tartness of the granny smith apples paired with the sweetness of the coconut sugar.
- Coconut Sugar – The coconut sugar is the next essential ingredient which adds sweetness to your apple butter. While the apples are naturally sweet, the addition of coconut sugar makes your apple butter even sweeter and more flavorful.

- Cinnamon – The cinnamon adds a ton of spice and flavor to the apple butter.
- Cloves – The cloves are the final spice you will want for this homemade apple butter recipe.
