Baked Apples With Oats and Maple Syrup

Good morning friends! Today’s recipe is one that I have been meaning to make for so long. I finally got around to writing out and testing my own version of baked apples last weekend, and it definitely did not disappoint. This recipe is vegan (of course!), and it also can be made gluten free by using gluten free oats.

This recipe is sweetened with pure maple syrup to provide the perfect amount of extra sweetness. I love the soft texture that the apples achieve through the baking process. Plus, baking the apples at high heat brings out the sweetness in them even more.

While some baked apples recipes do not include an oat crumble topping, I wanted mine to have that extra crunchy topping. The crumble is almost like a homemade granola, and it includes pure maple syrup and cinnamon for extra flavor and spice.

The oat crumble pairs perfectly with the baked apples, and all the flavors combine nicely to achieve an incredible taste. I love this sweet and simple snack, and I know you guys will too! Now, let’s take a look at some quick things to note for this recipe as well as the list of ingredients you will need to make these baked apples.

What kind of apples are good for baked apples?

One of the most common questions when it comes to making baked apples is which apples to use. Really, it is up to you. I have used a wide variety of apples when making apple treats (pink lady apples, honeycrisp apples, granny smith apples, etc.). I have enjoyed every single one of them.

For this recipe specifically, I used pink lady apples. I love the sweet and tart flavor combination that is present in pink lady apples. Of course, you can use whichever kind of apples you prefer or have on hand.

What can I do with lots of apples?

This recipe is perfect if you have a lot of apples lying around, because you can easily double or triple the recipe to make a bunch of baked apples. However, there are many other ways you can use apples as well. You can add them to your oatmeal, bake them into an apple pie, make a fresh apple crumble, and the list goes on.

Apples are one of those fruits that is super versatile. Apples taste incredible in so many different dishes. If you are looking to use them in baked goods specifically, I definitely recommend you try this recipe out if you want to make something quick and delicious.

Now, enough on that. Let’s dive into the list of ingredients you will need to make this vegan baked apples recipe.

Baked Apples With Oats and Maple Syrup – Ingredients

  • Fresh Apples The fresh apples are the first ingredient you will need for this recipe. This ingredient does not come as a surprise. As I mentioned above, you can use whichever apples you enjoy most or have on hand. I used pink lady apples.
  • Oats – The oats are the main ingredient that you will need for the oat crumble topping. If you want to make this recipe gluten free, make sure to use your favorite gluten free oats.
  • Cinnamon – The cinnamon adds a ton of spice and flavor to the oat crumble topping. It is the perfect spice to pair with apples, and this baked apple recipe is no exception.
  • Pure Maple Syrup – The pure maple syrup serves as the main source of additional sweetness for this recipe. You will be adding it into the oat crumble for sweetness and flavor.
  • Nut Milk – The nut milk adds additional moisture to the oat crumble topping. I used unsweetened vanilla almond milk, but you can use whichever non-dairy milk you enjoy most or have on hand.
  • Melted Coconut Oil – The melted coconut oil will be brushed on the apples before you bake them. This will help them achieve a golden brown color as they bake. It will also help them soften up as they bake.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter – The creamy peanut butter will be drizzled on top of the apples once they are done baking. If you don’t like peanut butter, you can easily sub another nut or seed butter.
