How to Make a Vegan Flax Egg
Hello friends! Today I thought I would make a post showing you how to make a vegan flax egg. A flax egg is something I use all the time in vegan baked goods. It acts as a binding agent, so it can replace a normal egg in cakes, cupcakes, muffins, and the list goes on. Using flax eggs in place of regular eggs is something I have been doing for years. So, if you’ve recently transitioned to a vegan diet or you’re cooking for someone who doesn’t eat eggs, it’s nice to know how to make a flax egg.
Hopefully, this quick, simple, and easy to follow tutorial will help you learn how to do exactly that. After you read through this tutorial, you can put yourself to the test by making my vegan almond blueberry muffin recipe or some delicious three ingredient pancakes.
Even before I went vegan, I baked with flax eggs often. This is because my dad hasn’t eaten eggs since he was very young. So, my mom never really baked with eggs, and I followed her lead. However, that’s not to say that I never ate eggs. I did eat scrambled eggs when I was younger, as I didn’t transition from my vegetarian diet to a vegan one until I was in college. I also ate baked desserts that other people made or brought to birthday parties, cross-country pasta parties, etc.
Now that I’m fully vegan, I bake exclusively with flax and chia seed eggs, and I find that both work incredibly well. So, that’s one of the main reasons I wanted to share this recipe with all of you today. Knowing how to make a flax egg gives you a ton of versatility when it comes to baking. This simple flax egg tutorial is one that I definitely recommend you try to nail down. Fortunately, it’s near impossible to mess up. So, let’s take a look at the quick list of simple steps required to make a flax egg. Then, we will go through the list of ingredients you will need to make a flax egg.
How to Make a Vegan Flax Egg – Basic Steps
The basic steps to making a flax egg will be described in more detail a bit further down in this post. Just as a quick overview, you basically combine ground flaxseed with water, let the mixture sit for a few minutes to thicken, and then add it into whatever batter you’d like. It really is as simple as that. Now that we’ve covered that, let’s go through the quick list of ingredients you will need to make a simple vegan flax egg.
How to Make a Vegan Flax Egg – Ingredients
- Ground Flaxseed – The ground flaxseed is the first essential ingredient you will need to make this flax egg (hence the name). You can purchase this at most grocery stores. I usually buy whatever is cheapest, which is usually the generic grocery store brand. You could also buy flaxseeds and grind them up in a blender yourself, but I find that it’s easy to just buy the flaxseed already ground up.
- Water – Water is the other key ingredient used in this recipe to create the flax egg. When you combine the water with the flaxseed, you end up with a thick, sticky mixture which is perfect to use in baked goods.

Notes
I hope you all found this simple flax egg tutorial helpful. In my personal opinion, it’s something that everyone should know how to make. Whether you are vegan or not, you might find the need to make a baked good without eggs at some point. Maybe you have a friend or family member who is vegan or allergic to eggs. If that’s the case, you can easily sub in flax eggs for regular eggs. As I mentioned before, flax eggs work well in so many different baked goods. I have used them in vegan cakes, cupcakes, muffins, breads, and more. The flavor and texture of the end product comes out perfect each and every time. Anyway, that’s it for this recipe. As per usual, I will be back with another blog post very soon.
