Easy Blueberry Chia Seed Jam
Good morning everyone! Today, I am bringing you a simple and delicious recipe for blueberry chia seed jam. I have tried so many store bought jellies/jams, and while some of them are decent, none of them measure up to the fresh taste of homemade jam. Fortunately, blueberry jam is very easy to make at home. It is also super versatile and very budget friendly. I love to use this blueberry jam on top of fresh sourdough bread with creamy peanut butter for a simple and delicious snack.
Now, let’s take a look at some quick logistics, as well as the three simple ingredients you will need to make this homemade blueberry chia seed jam.
Can I Substitute Chia Seeds For Pectin?
You have probably noticed that most store bought jams and jellies contain pectin. Pectin is an ingredient that is commonly used to thicken jams and jellies. However, this recipe is made using chia seeds instead, which means you don’t need any pectin.
The chia seeds are essential for this blueberry jam recipe. They serve two key purposes – to thicken the jam and bind it together. When chia seeds are soaked in liquid, they absorb it to form a thick, gel-like consistency. All you have to do is add the chia seeds to your blueberry mixture, and then place the mixture in the refrigerator to thicken. After about 15 – 20 minutes, you end up with a thicker consistency, which makes your blueberry chia seed jam more spreadable.
Now that we have gone through some logistics, let’s take a look at the ingredients list for this blueberry chia seed jam recipe.
Easy Blueberry Chia Seed Jam – Ingredients
- Frozen Blueberries – Frozen blueberries are the first key ingredient you will need for this easy chia seed jam recipe. This ingredient is certainly no surprise, but it is an essential nonetheless. You will be heating up your blueberries in the microwave until heated and soft, about 30 – 40 seconds. Then, you will simply mash them up with a fork to achieve your desired consistency. I like to leave some of my berries whole for more texture. Alternatively, you might be able to use fresh blueberries, although I haven’t tried it. If you do give it a try, I would recommend following the same method of popping the berries in the microwave to soften them up a bit before trying to mash them.
- Chia Seeds – The chia seeds are the second ingredient you will need for this recipe. They may be small, but they are definitely mighty. Chia seeds form a gel-like consistency when placed in liquid. They help absorb some of the liquid from the berries, and they also bind everything together. Overall, the chia seeds ensure that your jam turns out thick and spreadable.
- Coconut Sugar – The coconut sugar is the final necessary ingredient for this recipe. It provides your blueberry jam with additional sweetness. I only used a small amount of coconut sugar because I find that the berries already provide a lot of natural sweetness. However, you can easily add extra coconut sugar to taste if you want your jam sweeter.
